Launch Your Freelance Writing Career by David Steel – WritersLife.org

So now that you’ve got your “Why?”, what’s next? Before
you can embark on your freelance journey, you have to
decide what service you’ll be providing.

This works for all freelance industries, but since we
specialize in helping writers thrive at WritersLife.org, we’ll
be focusing our attention on writing.

Now you may be thinking, “Isn’t writing the service that I’m providing?”, and you would be right…to an extent. The
question we’re asking is, what kind of writing?

There is a market for just about every type of writing you
can imagine:

  • Blog posts/articles

  • Copywriting

  • SEO writing

  • Technical writing

  • And so on…

The question is: what kind of writing do you want to do?

Maybe you’re looking at this list and are unsure what some
of them are. Don’t strike those options off just yet! Take a
second, do a quick Google search, and educate yourself.
You’d be surprised how easily you can pick up a new style
of writing.

Unsure of which style to go with? Pick one or two styles
that appeal to you and create a sample.

For example, if writing for fitness blogs seems interesting,
you could start by writing a 500 word article on “How to
Establish a Morning Fitness Routine.” Worried you’re not
good enough? Search for “morning fitness routines” on
Google and read the first few posts to see your competition.

Once you’ve found your style, start practicing! Ideally, you
could practice through paid gigs, but sometimes you just
can’t. The benefit of practicing on your own is that you’ll
also be building a portfolio to showcase your skills to
potential clients.

Getting started as a freelance writer isn’t easy. You
have to hustle and persevere.

But if you’re dedicated to honing your craft, you’ll soon
find that you’re earning more than you expected doing
work that you love.

Keep your eyes open for my next email. Implementing this
next step can determine whether or not you’ll make it as a
freelance writer.

Talk to you soon!

As always “Writers Stick Together,”

P.S. Pro-tip: Define your niche. Even after you’ve
selected a style of writing, you’re still in a large market.
If you’re going to establish yourself as a premium service
provider, you’re going to need set yourself apart as a
specialist in what you do.

One of the easiest ways to define your niche is to zoom
in on a specific industry, e.g. Health and Fitness Blog
Writing, or Web Copy for Video Games. It may seem
counter-intuitive to become more exclusive, but this
exclusivity allows you to establish yourself as an expert,
which is what unlocks higher rates.

your visibility to potential clients, check out “Get Paid to Write”.
